Asking the Right Questions

I have a friend I spend a lot of time with, but he doesn’t know me. If you asked him what was going on in my life, he would have a hard time answering. The reason is simple; he doesn’t ask questions. I know all about him. I could tell you about his hopes and dreams, because when we’re together, I ask him questions. And that simple tale of a somewhat disinterested friend embodies a valuable principle.

In our lives, in our families, in our organizations, questions accomplish two critical things. They reveal values and they reinforce values.

They reveal what matters. Questions tear through all the clutter and get at the heart of what we care about, what’s crucial to our day, and what we’re ultimately invested in.

They reinforce what matters. They keep us focused on what’s critical. They keep us talking and monitoring the core values on which our families or organizations are built.

Developing a Healthy Staff Culture

Jeff Henderson, Campus Pastor, Buckhead Church

There’s a lot the business world can learn from the church world. There are just as many lessons the corporate world can offer church leaders. But whether it’s a church, a business, a profit, or nonprofit, successful organizations have one thing in common—a passion to develop their staffs.

Antioch Church: Establishing a Culture of Group Life

For 15 years, Bill Kirkpatrick served as the student pastor of Antioch Church, a nondenominational church located in Overland Park, Kansas.

Antioch had a sturdy, 30-year history. And while its four weekly services attracted nearly 2,000 adults and children, something was missing. Call it community, connectedness, or discipleship—the fact was that even though folks were filing into worship services, people were on individual spiritual journeys, far from those with whom they shared a pew.

Transitioning a Church—One Ministry at a Time

Hillside Marin, a nondenominational church located in the affluent North San Francisco Bay area, was in transition. In 2009, the pastor, Prince Altom, had decided that after 34 years of pastoring the church, retirement was on his horizon. And so he began the arduous process of finding a successor.

The hunt for a replacement went on without progress. Prince began to wonder if maybe the timing just wasn’t right. With uncertainty rising, Prince joined a colleague on a trip to Atlanta . . . the purpose—an exploration of strategic partner opportunities with North Point Ministries (NPM). He didn’t know it at the time, but his experience in Atlanta would drastically change the direction of Hillside Marin.
