Session Two
Set Realistic Expectations

The everyday aspects of grief can be overwhelming. Just because you’re grieving doesn’t mean your work and family responsibilities stop. Trying to keep all of the plates spinning while also trying to make progress on your grief journey can make you feel like you’re falling hopelessly behind.
Prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish.
Now is a time to shift your priorities so you can give the important things the attention they require while putting less important tasks on hold. Your life will need to slow down a little in order to make room for the healthiest possible journey through your grief. Your priorities will change. In order to make that happen, you’ll need to be intentional about caring for yourself while seeking support from others.
Be Intentional
- Remind yourself not to feel guilty about receiving care. Friends and loved ones want to help you.
- It’s okay to tell co-workers that you’d like to minimize talking about your grief during work hours.
- Plan events to look forward to, whether it’s a dinner with a friend, a vacation with family, or a new hobby.
- Pause before making major decisions, and seek wise counsel.
